There is no denying it, Rio de Janeiro is the picture postcard of Brazil for plenty of reasons: its beautiful beaches, its cultural life, musical and bohemian traditions, urban areas surrounded by waterfalls, the beauty of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake, the Christ Redeemer statue... The city has innumerous attractions and outings for all types of tourists. Rio de Janeiro is the most sought after destination in Brazil and attracts over one million foreigners a year. It is a typical tropical city, with an average temperature of 74.66ºF (23.7ºC) and a population of over six million. You cannot miss the visit to the Corcovado Mountain, on the top of which Christ Redeemer stands. The way up, which can be by car or train, is surrounded by greenery and at the top of the mountain there are stairways and lifts leading up to the 1,145 ton and 30 meter high statue (excluding the 8 meter-high pedestal). The view from the top is one of the most stunning in the state and in the world. From there you can see Copacabana, the lake, the Southern area neighborhoods, the hills, Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf Mountain) and the Botanical Garden. Make sure to visit the Botanical Garden, with its imperial palm trees. It is located in the neighborhood of the same name and in addition to 8,000 types of plants and flowers are its historical buildings. The park is also frequented by Rio de Janeiro’s locals, who seek tranquility and fresh air along tree-lined paths. It was built in 1808 by D.João VI and also holds the Casa dos Pilões, an old gunpowder factory. Rio de Janeiro is also known for its gastronomy, which ranges from delicious tapas served in bars, to international dishes served in starred restaurants. Basically, there is food for all tastes. The Southern area of the city holds the famous juice bars, which serve freshly squeezed fruit juices such as orange, cupuaçu and tamarind, açai bowls and sandwiches made with natural ingredients.

The Iguaçu River waterfalls attract tourists in search of nature’s greatest wonders. Foz do Iguaçu has a subtropical and humid climate. The temperatures exceed 104ºF (40ºC) in summer and drop below 23ºF (-5ºC) in winter. The Cataratas do Rio Iguaçu (Iguassu falls) are considered the biggest natural beauty on Earth. Tourists from all over the world flock to admire the gigantic waterfalls, which are comprised of 275 falls that reach up to 70 meters, at a volume of 6,500 cubic meters per second. The Cataratas trail starts at the Centro dos Visitantes (Visitor’s center) and continues by bus. On arrival at the falls you walk along a 1.2 kilometer walkway, accompanied by the constant gasps of amazement from tourists. When you reach Garganta do Diabo (Devil’s Throat), you are face-to-face with an enormous water jet - it is advisable to wear a raincoat otherwise you will get soaked. However, even with protection you are likely to get wet anyway. One of the coolest attractions in the region is the Macuco Safári, where visitors ride though native forest in an electric car and are shown by specialist guides the various plant species such as palm trees, Queen Palms, orchids, bromelias, fig trees and cinnamon trees. At some point in the trip people get out of the car and take a little walk to the Salto do Macuco waterfall, which is 25 meters high. From there you walk up to a deck to wait for a boat that will take you back to the Cataratas. This outing is sure to leave you wet. Another favorite with the tourists is a visit to the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant. Itaipu has a huge, 167 meters tall and 8 kilometers long dam and you can visit its turbines and steep drops. In addition to seeing the installations, visitors can also watch a video about the construction of the plant. There are also the options of special and technical tours, which are longer and take you to more places in the plant. A good tip for children is the Parque das Aves (Birds Park), which is 500 meters away from the falls. It is home to about 900 tropical birds from 150 different species, among which Tucans, Little-Wood Rails, Garganeys and Herons. You can go inside the aviaries and get close to the birds. They also have a butterfly zoo with more than 30 species. If you want to see the region’s night life, make sure to cross the border with Argentina for a visit to the Casino Iguazú, in the Iguazú Grand Hotel. It is 15 minutes away from Foz’s city center and about 500 meters from the Ponte Internacional Tancredo Neves (Tancredo Neves International Bridge). The casino is on a 1,200 square meter area completely surrounded by nature. It has 30 gambling tables and 200 machines.
